Tanglewood's Winter Wonderland

Dust of Snow

by Robert Frost (1923)

The way a crow
Shook down on me
The dust of snow
From a hemlock tree

Has given my heart
A change of mood
And saved some part
Of a day I had rued.

A Crystal of Snow
by M. Lucille Ford

A crystal of snow is a wonderful thing
With texture as fine as a butterfly's wing;
With network of atoms like filmy spun lace,
Or petal arrangement of fair flower face.

A crystal of snow is a beautiful thing
With the sparkle of drops what to spicers' webs cling
On a bright dewy morn; and the luster of pearl;
Or a diamond gleam on a glistening curl.

A crystal of snow is a curious thing -
With dew of summer - or rain of spring -
And frost of autumn mixed into it all
The flowers of cloudland that earthward do fall.

A Winter Postcard
The beauty of a winter's morn -
when snow is fresh and clean;
Boughs on evergreens clothed in white -
a pretty sight to be seen.
Bushes are, themselves, a garden -
to be remembered in the spring;
A postcard scene on a winter's morn,
to me, is everything.

Snowfall
by Margaret Hillert

Someone in the sky last night
Had an awful pillow fight,
And when I woke today I found
All the feathers on the ground.

Surprise

I opened my eyes and my room was bright.
I wondered what had happened outside last night.
I opened the windows and let everyone know,
The world was covered with fluffy white snow.
I grabbed my mittens, my scarf and my suit,
And pulled on my brand new winter boots.
I ran outside and I started to play,
And I hoped that the snow was here to stay.

Children and Snow
All winter they had waited; nature didn't let them down.
The squeals and giggles grew as they played without a frown.
Sliding down the perfect hills - a children's paradise;
No thought of clearing their white souffle, no thought of chopping ice.
My fingers, ears and toes felt frozen as I shovelled the mountain of snow
But my heart was warm and light as the laughter continued to grow.
Winter is for children; I'm sure of that today.
This is the season they tumble and laugh and truly love to play.
Computers are forgotten and they only see the snow;
Imaginations leap and soar - this is how little minds grow.

Winter

 The winds of Winter blow;
The frost will come and bite,
And on the ground below,
The snow will fall at night.
And children sleeping know
They’ll wake to snowy white;
These Winter days will show
A child’s warm delight.

Oh wicked Winter, know,
Though to the heart you fight,
You set our hearts aglow
With every Winter night!

Thaw

The snow is soft,
and how it squashes!
"Galumph, galumph!"
go my galoshes.

Snow

by Mary Ann Hoberman

Snow
Snow
Lots of snow
Everywhere we look
And everywhere we go
Snow in the sandbox
Snow on the slide
Snow on the bicycle
Left outside
Snow on the steps
And snow on my feet
Snow on the sidewalk
Snow on the sidewalk
Snow on the sidewalk
Down the street.

Winter Wonderland

There are strange and mysterious sounds
When the winds of winter blow,
The long nights are crystal clear and cold,
And the fields and meadows are covered with snow.
The stars are frosty against the sky,
And the wind's whistle is shrill,
As the snow blows against the house
And drifts against the hill.
Yet, I like to see during the winter
A white carpet on the ground,
To plod aimlessly in the deep snow,
where deer tracks abound.
I like to feel the stillness
Of a crisp winter's night,
Watching a full moon rise over the horizon,
Exposing a winter wonderland beautiful and bright.

Snow
by Lillie D. Chaffin

Snow blows
In bunches.
Snow sparkles
And crunches.

Snow is clean and cold.
Snow is crisp, and yet
When it warms a little,
Snow is wet.

Any winter day, I know,
Is pleasanter when there is snow.

It Fell in the City
by Eve Merriam

It fell in the city,
It fell through the night,
And the black rooftops
All turned white.

Red fire hydrants
All turned white.
Blue police cars
All turned white.

Green garbabge cans
All turned white.
Gray sidewalks
All turned white.

Yellow NO PARKING signs
All turned white.
When it fell in the city
All through the night.

Once Upon A Winter Day

 Once upon a winter day
Gray clouds passed swiftly across the sky
As shapely snowflakes fell steadily down,
Covering the land in a dazzling white
Leaving a winter calling card on the ground.

Once upon a winter day
The snow-edged creek silently wept
Near the shadows of the tall pine trees
Trimmed in a glittering white lace,
Creating an impressive display in the breeze.

Once upon a winter day
Branches drooped to the impassable road
Due to the weight of the snow.
Icicles hung from the dormant trees
In view of the shattered daylight glow.

Once upon a winter day
Nothing is heard but rubbing tree limbs
And a stray dog faintly barking,
The vibrant sound of a frightened deer,
A broken tree branch suddenly falling.

Once upon a winter day
The distant snow-covered hills
Loomed in the path of the gloomy sky,
Where the northerly wind briskly growled
As chickadees and juncos fluttered by.

Snowflakes

Snowflakes spill from heaven's hand
Lovely and chaste like smooth white sand.
A veil of wonder laced in light
Falling Gently on a winters night.

Graceful beauty raining down
Giving magic to the lifeless ground.
Each snowflake like a falling star
Smiling beauty that's spun afar.

Till earth is dressed in a robe of white
Unspoken poem the hush of night.

Humility

Snow, falling thick and white, along the village street,
People struggling through the drifts, their shopping to complete,
Kids dragging sledges, excitement fills their minds,
Rolling a giant snowball, great, cos this is snow that binds.

Trees looking decorated up, with icicles that glint,
Branches weighed down with snow, which holds a golden tint,
That bright red sun that's setting, way out towards the west,
A wonderful rich vision, ordered at our Lord's behest.

Wonders of our lands, that are so stunning and so free,
That if we took the time to stare, we'd know true humility.

Ernestine Northover

Raining snow

There was once a little town
Where it rained only heavy snow
The town was consumed by sadness
It kept snowing a fortress
of never ending madness

'Raining snow, pour down and go'
They would say
'All you do is make us feel low'

Winter has never been our friend
Coldness is the only message it sends
Rivers turn into blocks of cold ice
Everyone is everything but nice
Obstacles hit us not once but thrice
Why shower us with such a price?

The raining snow replied,
'If you all just unite as one,
Your warmth alone will melt the ice'

SNOW

The snow falls throughout the night
As right as the moonlight
In the midnight sky
And as soft as satin

The snow is white
As white as the clouds
And ever so cool
As cool as the ice

The snow is flaky
As it gently falls
And covers the earth
Like a down filled blanket

The Life of a Season

 Autumn bids a fond farewell
As Sister Winter takes her place
The colors of the trees in glory
With Winter's white is soon replaced
As Winter's gift is gently falling
Upon the trees that soundly sleep
The world in silent wonder watches
The miracle the season brings

Sadly, nothing in this fickle world
May live forever in its youth
And likewise winter starts to age
Her beauty she begins to lose

Her snow white hair now turns to gray
Her voice is quiet when she speaks
And as the days grow warm and long,
Her touch is light while she grows weak

And soon the people who had loved her
Grow tired of her chilling song
Then Winter sadly leaves her throne
And waits for baby spring to come along

So old, frail Winter bids farewell
As Sister Spring now takes her place
She waits with quiet, steady patience
To come again with youth and grace.

Surviving March

I love the winter, love the snow -
please don't get me wrong;
It's just that as the years go by
I find I'm not as strong.

On Tuesday, I shovelled hard -
did it all three times;
Yesterday came and, once again,
I cleared it while humming rhymes.

Rhymes I should have been writing for you,
somehow, got left in the snow.
Today is bright and sunny, but cold -
but no words do I find I know.

Winter should be a time of rest;
that's what I used to think.
Right now I look over mountains of white
and dream of my flowers, pink.

Spring will feel most-welcome this year
if it ever does arrive;
And when I tire of digging the soil
I'll think of the winter I survived.

Snowflakes

by Victoria Lantz

Little snow flakes so soft and white,
Falling silently during the night.
Glistening in the sun today,
Makes us want to come out and play.
We'll build a snowman
And a fort or two.
Which wouldn't be possible, without you.
We love it when they cancel school,
You'll hear us yell, "snow days are cool!"
Pretty soon though, you will melt
But we'll always remember just how we felt,
The day the snow came tumbling down,
And covered every street in town.
